TOEFL ITP vs iBT vs PBT: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

TOEFL Isn't Just One Test
Many people assume TOEFL is a single test, but there are actually several versions with different formats and use cases: TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test), TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program), and TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Test, now rarely used).
Choosing the right TOEFL version matters because each has a different purpose and level of acceptance at your destination institution.
TOEFL iBT: The International Standard
TOEFL iBT is the most widely accepted version for university applications abroad, especially in the United States. It's fully computer-based, covers all four skills (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing), and results can be sent directly and officially to your destination institution.
iBT scores use a 0-120 scale and are valid for 2 years from the test date, making it suitable for formal university applications or visa purposes.
TOEFL ITP: Practical for Internal Requirements
TOEFL ITP is typically used for internal purposes like university graduation requirements, domestic scholarship selection, or job requirements in Indonesia. It only covers Listening, Structure & Written Expression, and Reading, without a Speaking or Writing section.
Because the format is simpler and more affordable, TOEFL ITP is a popular choice for needs that don't require a full international certification.
TOEFL PBT: Rarely Used Anymore
TOEFL PBT was the popular paper-based version before the digital era, but it's now rarely offered officially by ETS for new registrations. Some institutions may still refer to PBT when they actually mean a format similar to ITP.
Which One Should You Take?
If your goal is a formal application to a university abroad or an international work visa, TOEFL iBT is the right choice. If your need is for an internal campus requirement or a domestic scholarship in Indonesia, TOEFL ITP is usually sufficient and more time- and cost-efficient.
